Mmmm!
Quinn picked up the candle I keep on her nightstand (Yankee Candle, Clean Cotton scent) and took a big sniff. "Does it smell good?" I asked her.
"YES," she said. "It smells like flowers and toofpaste and books!"

Wish lists
Quinn and I were looking at catalogues after we finished breakfast this morning. She flipped through an American Girl catalogue, closed it, and said in the tiniest mouse voice imaginable, "Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"I don't have enough toys."
I choked back a laugh and said, "Really? What do you think you should have?" She picked up the magazine and found the page with the Ultimate Bubble Bath Set and mumbled something.
"This is what you think you need?" I asked.
She mumbled and looked down smiling.
"Well," I said. "Maybe Santa will bring it."
She looked at me, immediately panicked. Last year we weren't even able to say the word "Santa," so terrified she was that he would enter her house and I don't know, eat her or something. I thought she'd be ready to talk about him this year.
"NO! I don't want SANTA to come here!"
"That's what Santa does, Sweetie. He comes to kids' houses and he brings them toys on Christmas."
"I don't want Santa to bring it," she told me. "I just want to get it at Target."

Secrets
Quinn tells secrets sometimes.
"Come here, Mama," she called to me as Andy and I struggled to put the cover on the pool last weekend. She was sitting obediently on the bench where we'd told her to stay. "I have to tell you a secret."
"What, Sweetie?" I asked her, bending over to hear.
"Mama," she whispered as she hung both arms around my neck. "I'm gettin' a little chilly out here."
And when we were eating lunch today, she told me she had a secret for me. I leaned over to her and she whispered, "Um...I think when I get done eatin' my soup, I'd like to play a little bit before my nap."
Really, there is nothing more delicious than her secrets.

Astronomy news from school
In Quinn's classroom, a series of 10 styrofoam balls of varying sizes hang from the ceiling, representing the solar system. They range in size from an inch in diameter for Pluto, to six inches for the sun. Jupiter is slightly smaller than the sun.
Of course, this representation is not at all to scale, as you can see here. The planets are all equally spaced along a 10-foot span of ceiling, which is also very inaccurate. But I guess that 4-year-olds don't need to get introduced to distances measured in AU just yet.
Anyway, Quinn knows some planet names and there's apparently a song about the planets, too, but she hasn't sung it for me. Tonight as I tucked her in and we talked about her day, I said something about planets, and her eyes got wide. She told me, "Today at school, PLU-to was MISS-ing! Miss Peg had to go the STORE and buy aNOVver!"
